Využití zvuku je dnes nedílnou součástí umělecké tvorby, často však jako pouhým rozšířením vizuál-
ních děl, například ve videoartu a multimediálních instalacích. Umělec Rodolphe Alexis považuje vnímání zvuku za primární: je pro něj nejen přístupovou cestou ke světu, ale také silným prostředkem pro sdílení zkušeností a vzájemných citlivých vztahů. Výstava Ze tmy nabízí, skrze téměř dvacet děl z poslední doby, cestu budovou Galerie Luxfer, od
sklepa až po půdu, a vyzývá k různým formám pozornosti: k poslechu a pohledu, čtení a mluvě, kritické
diskusi a snění, představivosti a materiální skutečnosti.
Výchozí bod umělcovy praxe je nahrávání (přímý záznam v terénu), posléze studiové zpracování
(zvukový design, skladba) a využití v různých formách, od kompozice po performanci, instalaci, rozhlas a
fotografii, a také tvorbu jednoduchých výstavních zařízení.
Zvuková krajina, slova, hlasy, zvířecí vokály, lidé, nalezené objekty a kolektované užitkové předměty
postupně návštěvníkovi otevírají, skrze poslech, dokumentární rozměr. Neboť více než kdy jindy v nejistém světě a s pokušením, které sdílí mnozí, si autor svým způsobem vypůjčuje z postupů antropologů, přesvědčen, že užívání světa jinými je poučným odrazem našeho vlastního užívání.

Rodolphe Alexis rád používá termín audiografie, což je forma psaní, která umožňuje sdílení momentů
a zážitků pohybem mezi jazyky a médii, zvuky a formami, intimitou a publikem, jednotlivým a kolektivním.
Rodolphe Alexis, veden počáteční osobní přitažlivostí přírodovědce k ekologickému, geografickému a
lidskému kontextu, již více než dva roky zkoumá území Sept Septembre ve státě Rondônia v brazilské
Amazonii, ve spolupráci s domorodým lidem Paiter Surui. Výstava Ze tmy je pokusem o překlad souboru
zvukových i hmotných poznámek, svědectví a porozumění.
Po temném prostoru elektroakustického díla ve sklepě galerie, v dalších sálech a patrech zvuky
postupně nabývají hmotné podoby. Ozvučením předmětů denní potřeby, shromážděním úryvků slov, které jsou zde prezentovány prostřednictvím obrazových a záznamových zařízení, reinterpretací přírodních drobných elementů nalezených umělcem v amazonském pralese, trasa výstavy citlivě zpřítomňuje mentální, kulturní a sociální prostor a jeho křehký ekosystém, vzdálený a přesto slyšitelný pro naše nezbytné povědomí o světě.

Výstava Ze tmy umělce Rodolpha Alexise je navržena francouzským kurátorem a kritikem umění Christophem Domino, na pozvání Galerie Luxfer. Rodolphe Alexis je umělec, zvukový designér a profesor na Vysoké škole umění a designu v Le Mans ve Francii, Rodolphe Alexis vytváří elektroakustické a rozhlasové skladby, poslechová zařízení a instalace. Pravidelně spolupracuje s výtvarným a scénickým uměním, muzeografií a se skupinami umělců a vědců. Již více než deset let rozvíjí osobní přístup k „audiografii“ a provádí univerzitní výzkum. Je také kurátorem a programátorem akcí a výstav. Jeho díla byla vydána v několika specializovaných vydavatelstvích, uváděna na festivalech a dalších veřejných akcích ve Francii i po celém světě a vysílána v rozhlase.

The sound dimension has now become an established part of contemporary artists’ practice, often however as a simple, sensitive extension of visual practices. For example, in video art and multimedia installations. Artist Rodolphe Alexis, for his part, considers the sensation of sound to be primary to his approach: for him, it is a powerful means of accessing the world, but also a powerful means of sharing experience. Responding to the invitation of Galerie Luxfer, Ze tmy (From the dark) exhibition features some twenty recent works, most of which are sound-based, forming a journey through the gallery building, from cellar to attic, that calls on several forms of attention: listening and looking, reading and speaking, critical thinking and daydreaming, imagination and materiality. Using the gesture of recording as a starting point, the artist’s practice is open to many forms, from composition to performance, installation, radio and photography. Rodolphe Alexis uses both direct capture (field recording) and studio elaboration (sound design, composition), all of which are incorporated into simple devices in the exhibition room.

The mix of voices, aural landscape, animal vocalizations, words, people, things found and objects collected provides a documentary dimension for the visitor. For, more than ever in an uncertain world, and according to a temptation shared by many, the artist borrows in his own way from the practices of anthropologists, convinced that others’ use of the world is an illuminating reflection of our own use. Rodolphe Alexis talks about “audiography”, a form of notation that allows moments and experiences to be shared by shifting between languages and media, sounds and forms, between the intimate and the public, between the singular and the collective. Driven by an initial personal attraction as a naturalist,
attached to an ecological, geographical and human context, the artist has been exploring a territory in the
Brazilian Amazon —the Indigenous Land of September 7th, in the state of Rondônia— for more than two years,
in collaboration with the Paiter Surui people. Ze tmy (From the dark) exhibition is an attempt to transform a
collection of sound and material notes, testimonies and understandings in sensitive displays.
After the dark space of an electroacoustic work in the Galerie’s cellar, the works are often embodied in forms derived from material culture and sound. Through the sonorization of everyday objects, the restitution of fragments of speech collected on site, and the collection of natural objects specific to the Amazonian forest reinvested by the artist’s eye, the itinerary renders sensitive a fragile mental, cultural and social universe within ecosystems, distant but made manifest to our necessary awareness of the world.

The exhibition Ze tmy by artist Rodolphe Alexis is proposed by French curator and art critic Christophe Domino, at the invitation of Luxfer Gallery. Rodolphe Alexis is an artist, sound designer and professor at Le Mans College of Art and Design in France, Rodolphe Alexis creates electroacoustic and radio compositions, listening devices and
installations. He regularly collaborates with visual and performing arts, museography and groups of artists and scientists. For over a decade he has been developing a personal approach to ‘audiography’ and conducting university research. He is also a curator and programmer of events and exhibitions. His works have been published by several specialized publishers, performed at festivals and other public events in France and around the world, and broadcast on radio.
